Some due updates

So, I guess apologies are due – since I did promise to update more often (and have been receiving numerous threatening emails demanding that I do just that…), but sometimes you find out life has other plans for you.
I have recently been touring in Japan for 3.5 weeks with the Mrs. and while that’s a story on it’s own (I have some posts I am writing on those), it does factor into the whole delay of posting. While we traveled I had no easy way of updating, and once I got back – workload had piled up so much, It felt like drowning for a little while.
Later I struck some difficulties with my previous webhost – now, if you are hosting a website, let me give you some advice I had to learn the hard way: always have your site hosted with a different company than your domain registrar!
It almost cost me my domain :/

But I digress, we are here to talk FindeXer. So, not much new to tell as you have already deduced I was rather short of time. But I have managed to squash 2 annoying bugs for users of the latest version.

Changelog :

  • BugFix, Compatibility with Windows Vista and Vista SP1 x64 versions was added as a separate download.
  • Some minor code tweaks to context menu code.
  • BugFix(?), The default action for folders in Windows Vista is Explore (which opens up a new explorer window using the “explorer.exe /separate” command. FindeXer now tests for a browsable object and browses within the current window if it is. If not, old behaviour of default action is performed…

Let me close this by saying a quick thanks to those of you who have donated, it eased the burden of purchasing this new hosting plan (which I hope you all will enjoy, as we are now on stabler, faster servers).
If you have been enjoying FindeXer and wish me to keep it in development (and “on the air”) – feel free to click on some of the ads (courtesy of our G friends) or to donate using paypal.

In the mean while, enjoy this latest download…

    great!!!
is that possible to add different picture freely on it ,i mean not only text or icon are allowed?
    thanks!

  2. Tom Says:

    Hi Vincent,
Not sure what you mean. if you are asking if other formats are supported other then .ico (like .png and .jpeg) then the answer is yes.

  3. Camelot Says:

First, thank you very much for Findexer, honestly is the best I’ve ever tasted.
My question is how to save the settings of my previous version (1.1.0.3) to avoid having to configure all over again when installing the new (1.1.0.4b)
Exactly, how file to be backup to use later.

I speak Spanish. My English is poor, sorry

  4. Tom Says:

    Hi Camelot,

Sorry, but there’s no easy way to switch between versions while keeping your settings. I had to rewrite the whole way of saving the shortcuts in order to allow for new functionality and there was no way to keep it compatible with previous versions AND allow for future growth.
What I did when i transitioned between versions was to take a snapshot of my icons and then i just reconfigured by that snapshot later. it took about 10 minutes, but you just have to do it once…

Hope you enjoy this new version, it has some nice new functionality… πŸ™‚

  5. Ryan Says:

Tom im getting the application configuration is incorrect error like the 5 people from the last post you made have you found out anything about that?

  6. Ryan Says:

Ok i figured out the problem apparently you’re required to have .net 3.5 installed you should make people aware of that.

  7. Ryan Says:

Actually its not .net 3.5 you need i had to actually install visual c++ express edition just to RUN it lol so something must be missing.

  8. fran Says:

hello friend. i have a problem witch your findexer…
I have a shellstyle imitating the sight of windows in the bottom of my windows … unfortunately the bar findexer comes entirely from the bottom up surpassing all my shellstyle, windows in the bar view that emulates your program is excellent for in that shellstyle .. not far below the all … I wondered if there was any way to fix it or is a mistake which can be corrected for next versions… thanks… i wait news

  9. Tom Says:

@Ryan, glad you sorted it out – it is all in the readme.txt for your convenience πŸ˜‰

@fran – I’m not sure I understand your problem, would it be possible to add a picture to your post or email me one?

  10. fran Says:

    yes i can

  11. fran Says:

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/8286/findexerbuglx1.png…. in this image This is the error that you comment .. findexer bar reaches the bottom of the window … and not to be in the shellstyle as actually happens in Windows Vista … it was just that mistake … I like that it could correct .. thanks again

  12. fran Says:

if you can not see … Mind Devia art … and put into the search engine findexer … on the first page you will appear windows 7 icons for findexer … you get in that entry … and almost at the bottom of the page windowsnet puts a link … because there is this image … I’m sorry

  13. Tom Says:

@fran, that is picture is very incomprehensible for me, i still don’t understand what’s wrong.
perhaps you can take a screenshot of the whole explorer window. Currently there is only some writing on a white space (if that is the picture you meant for me to see).

  14. fran Says:

  15. fran Says:

in devian art… the bug is correct in windows seven for xp v1.0 by xp70… you look this page…please

I’d like to file a feature request.

I’d really be grateful to be able to open windows in a new instance, an option, or perfectly, a mouse shourtcut (like left click:same window, middle click:new one) would be nice.

    Thank you in advance.

  18. mnemesis Says:

hello sir…could you make glossy HotTracking instead of plain color?

  19. Estuardo Choc Says:

Works pretty well!!! Thanks for share it, I checked this page a few months ago and tonight i found the bookmark, and i downloaded your program cause now i know it’s updated. A suggestion culd be include the folder/file options in findexer (the list that changes with the media files, reproduce all music files, create new folder, see images like…, the file details and stuf like that) or maybe switch to that making it a tab in findexer, cause believe it or not i find very useful some of these functions. Anyway thanks for this program, looks awesome in my explorer πŸ˜‰

  20. roger Says:

You can fix the error you explain this fran? if you want your findexer resembles the bara of view perfectly and you should fix it if it is not so difficult to understand especially if you compare it with Windows XP and Windows Vista original findexer

  21. moshee Says:

When I double-click on ‘register.bat’ I get some sort of dllreg something error (0x80070005). I have installed the C++ runtime and did everything else in the readme… am I missing something?
I’m running Vista SP1 32-bit, if that matters.
    thanks

  22. Magnus Says:

    Hi Tom!!!

    Great work again!!! πŸ˜€

    Byes & Good Luck Γ±_Γ±

  23. John Says:

omg I can’t believe that I’ve been using the ordinary explorer bar until now, this is so much more efficient!!!!!!!!!

The ONLY thing that I’d like is a create new folder option, I actually used that all the time with the ordinary explorer bar. other than that, great app!!

  24. Stephan Says:

    Greetings
I’ve got one tiny feature request and hope I can explain it here.

If I want to rename a file Findexer sometimes steals the focus. The problem is that I sometimes hover over the Findexer-bar if I try to select the filetext. If I pull the cursor to far -> over the Bar (hehe nice) the file isn’t selected anymore.

I hope you understand what I mean & also that it is possible to fix it.

Findexer is a great modification for win. It don’t want to miss it so thank you for your work.

  25. ryan Says:

i have vista and downloaded it, when i click register it gets error code 0x80070005. please email me ryaniss0beast@aol.com please helppppppp

  26. ryan Says:

yeah i have the same problem as moshee. i installed the c++ thing and i still get the same error, ive tried to reinstall it again and again, still dont work

  27. hdlineage Says:

Is there a way to assign a hotkey call calling out Findexer toolbar?
It would be great if it has one =)
or if you can teach my how to…
    Thank you

  28. Will Says:

‘Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 redistributable package’ has been installed already in my PC.

After running ‘register.bat’ and an error occured.

Although I removed 2008 package and then installed 2005 package as your guide,

but the registration of Findexer was failed.

Do you have any solution for this problem?

? After reboot, I can find ‘Findexer’ in ‘view’ of explorer menu,

    and Findexer window showed up.

but any folder or icon were not able to drag&drop to Findexer window.

  29. OUTARU Says:

    hello Tom!

I’m using Fidexer for almost a year, and I’m appreciated to this application(and your effort) which helps me using Windows Explorer more efficiently!

I think of a little bit ideas of Findexer features of hotkey settings which could be more convinient when using explorer.

In general cases, I often click folders with Ctrl key pressed, which can open the folder in a new window.

If clicking icons in Findexer with Ctrl Key pressed turns out to opening a new window(if folder), I think Findexer would be perfect!

  30. Mushbird Says:

Thanks! Working great on Windows XP X64!

  31. Haych Says:

For anyone getting the 0x80070005 error on Vista. Try copying and pasting the FindeXer.dll file into your C:\ Windows\system32 folder, then run the Register.bat file for Findexer as administrator (right click file, select run as adminstrator).

It worked for me, and I hope it works for you πŸ™‚

  32. TheSaladMan Says:

Hi there Tom, I love this app, except the only things missing are the drop downs, other than that my only problem is I’m running vista and all the icons displayed in the FindeXer bar all have very jagged edges, is there anyway to fix this?

I took a screenshot just in case: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3264/jaggededges.jpg

  33. Oi3 Says:

    Hello Tom,
I’ve downloaded the program, it’s fantastic, very easy to use and customize.
please keep up developing the program, it’s amazing.

  34. cjborodin Says:

hey tom! i downloaded findexer a couple weeks ago and it’s great. only a couple problems. well, first i should let you know that i’m running vista sp1 home premium (x86). 1) my first problem is that after i enabled findexer in explorer, i can’t disable it. i can right click and close the bar, i can uncheck load in every window by default, i can go to view-explorer bar-findexer and uncheck it, but when i open up another window, there it is again! so that can be irritating. 2) when r u gonna add drop down menus to findexer??? and yes i do know your time is limited but i just wanted to know when it will be in there. 3) a little something which i’m sure you’re aware about. is there any way of extending the details pane and the organize, view, etc bar around findexer, like in the navigation pane? cuz they stop at the edge of findexer, and don’t go around it.

thanks so much πŸ™‚ – cjborodin

  35. Erkaz Says:

Lemme ask some questions n give some suggestions. Where did FindeXer save its config?
BTW an “config.ini” and “shortcut.ini” file for FindeXer should be useful and awesome….

  36. alfatreze Says:

Hi, I had found this a long time ago, and while browsing my links I just rediscovered it, as I had stopped using quite some time ago, This new version seems much more stable and fast.

As I was reading that you cannot implements tabs no so on, I have a suggestion for easing the enabling/disabling of findexer, as we sometimes do need to use a tree :). As it depends on complexity I see two options.
    1- Adding a shortcut to enable/disable findexer, in View/explorer bar/findexer
2- Adding an icon to the toolbar to enable/disable findexer, it could be right next ot the folders one, you’d just customize the tolbar and add it there.

In my meager understandic of windows entrails, I suppose it should be simple enough, but one never knows, and render the day to day use of explorer so much nicer.

cheers, and good luck with the development

  37. Liegepk Says:

First, this is my favorite site for real.
Second, I love your work, Tom.
Third, what I am about to write down has nothing to do with findexer…. well kinda…

Since I respect you, Tom, so much and believe that your works are ingenious, I would like to ask you if you know if blackbox or styler is possible for 64-bit(I have xp 64 bit pro)
if not, is there anyway you can make it work with your superb coding skill.

  38. bohakku Says:

    Hey there, good work!
For those getting error about “failed Loadblabla(.dll) due to to application installed blablabla” – i got this on one machine using the same windows distribution as others :D. I just tried version 1.1.03 instead of 1.1.0.4 and it worked!

  39. daniel Says:

Hi, findexer is amazing program….but how can I save a certain config? It seems that i cant save nor load my favorite configs. Each time I change my pc themes I have to reconfigure again, which is troublesome…
Can you make this feature work? Thanks!!!!!

  40. Krazy Bluez Says:

Can I suggest you something… why don’t you add an option to use background image behind instead of using the plain old colours… and as many said, the glossy HotTracking option would be great if you allowed them….

  41. Cracker36 Says:

First of all… great work man, you deserve all my respect this app is one of the little things that make life better (well digital life πŸ™‚ ) however i ve noticed that the option to eject usb drive does not work, is this a bug or is it just unfinished??

  42. SKB Says:

It doesn’t want to work for me it successfully installs and I’ve restarted explorer and Windows but FindeXer doesn’t show up in the view menu.

I’m running XP Pro SP2 tried the latest build and the last stable build neither worked.

  43. Xarathos Says:

Hi, Tom; this looks absolutely fantastic, but unfortunately I can’t seem to get it to work. I’m running Windows Vista SP1, and I’ve tried several builds starting with the first build which mentioned Vista compatibility, and everything registers correctly; however, the bar itself does not appear in my View -> Explorer Bars menu whether after reboot or explorer restart. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might do differently to get this working?

  44. Xarathos Says:

Hey, Tom, just wanted to let you know that I managed to get this working under Vista SP2; Thank you so much for making this awesome app available to Vista users. πŸ˜€

  45. byte Says:

Running XP Pro SP3. Same as above, though, registers fine with no errors, but doesn’t appear as an option after restarting explorer/Windows. Had it working fine on Windows Home SP2.

  46. Supratim Nayak Says:

Hello Tom! Thanx a lot for updating it to be usable in Vista. It was a much-awaited update.
By the way, I wanted to know if we could customize the background of the sidebar; there are only colors that we can change but is it possible by some means to use an irregular background for it, like the one we see in Vista Control Panel?

  47. vera Says:

Hi tom, I thing your Findexer tool is great. Well done πŸ™‚
But I would ask you a question. Please, can you post on your web-site or send to my mail, hash codes like MD5 and/or SHA1 for findexer DLL or (better) for the Findexer archive (Zip folder)?
I use XP SP3 and I always choose to download and use tools digitally signed or with hash codes to verify that the archive has not been corrupted or tampered during the download.
Hope you answer me as soon as possible
Thanks in advance and best regards
    ver@ πŸ™‚

  48. Tom Says:

@Xarathos: good to hear you were able to install, hope you enjoy using it.
@byte: perhaps you encountered the same problem as Xarathos, what is your configuration and please describe the installation process.
@Supratim: though slowly progressing (I have very little time these days), skinning will be implemented in the next versions.
@vera: I will try and provide these for the next versions. But meanwhile, as long as you download from my site (this shouldn’t be available anywhere else anyway), you can be sure you are safe πŸ˜‰

    Prevent moving folders:
change register.bat to copy file to windows directory:

    copy FindeXer.dll %windir%\system32\
    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\FindeXer.dll

it will prevent if we move original folder.
